I Waved. Then They Followed Me Home.

I was driving home the other day when I passed a group of guys down by the local fish pond. There were eight of them. I didn't think twice about it. I just waved and kept going.

A few minutes later, three cars came rushing through the electric gate at my property.

I Walked Out Calmly

I didn't run. I didn't yell. I walked out of the house with two dogs at my side: Adam, my Doberman, and Sergeant, my Black German Shepherd.

I didn't say a word to the dogs, either. I didn't have to. I used silent hand and foot signals, and the dogs did the rest. They didn't bark. They locked on and held their position, calm and ready.

The Whole Mood Changed

You could see it happen. The attitude of the visitors melted away once they saw the level of control in front of them. Two dogs, no noise, and a handler who wasn't rattled at all.

Before long, they weren't talking about anything else. They started asking about dog training. I pointed them back toward the pond, and they left.

What This Really Shows

This isn't about being tough, and it isn't about aggressive dogs. A dog that barks and lunges is a dog that's out of control. What those men saw was the opposite: calm, quiet control.

That kind of control doesn't come from volume. It comes from leadership. When your dog trusts you and understands exactly what you expect, you can lead with a hand signal instead of a shout.
